The Story
Standing smack at the start of the Royal Road, the Powder Tower is one of those spots you stumble into and then wonder how you didn't make it your first stop. Built back in 1475 as one of the original city gates of Prague, it got its quirky name from the 1700s when the city decided to store gunpowder in it. Not exactly a museum origin story, but honestly? It makes it cooler.
What makes this Gothic beauty even better is what's right next to it — the stunning Art Nouveau Municipal House, which was attached in the early 1900s. Together they create one of the most photographed corners in all of Central Europe, and once you're standing there you'll totally understand why.
You can climb the tower for panoramic rooftop views over the Old Town. Spoiler: it's worth every step of the spiral staircase. Prague looks absolutely wild from up there — a sea of terracotta rooftops, church spires, and the castle in the distance. Pure magic.
Tips & Tricks
Make your visit count
Go Early or Go Evening
The square in front gets absolutely packed by midday. Aim for opening time around 10am or swing by late afternoon when the tour groups thin out and the light goes golden. The tower looks incredible in that warm late-day sun.
Shoot Both Buildings Together
Cross the road (carefully — trams!) and get wide-angle. The juxtaposition of Gothic tower meets Art Nouveau Municipal House is unreal. The photo from across Na Prikope street is the one you'll actually post.
Climb the Tower
It's 186 steps up a tight spiral staircase — no lift. But the 360-degree view over Old Town Prague from the top is genuinely one of the best in the city. Catch it on a clear day and you'll see the castle, the river, and basically forever.
Skip the Tourist Trap Cafes Nearby
The immediate area around the tower is pricy. Walk two blocks down Celetna Street into the Old Town and prices literally halve. Grab a coffee, sit down, and people-watch the Royal Road foot traffic instead.
Combine It with Municipal House
Seriously, do not skip the Municipal House right next door. The Art Nouveau interiors are absolutely jaw-dropping. You can join a guided interior tour or just grab a coffee at the gorgeous ground-floor cafe. Either way — go in.
It's the Start of the Royal Road
The Powder Tower marks the beginning of Prague's historic Royal Road — the ceremonial route Czech kings once walked to Prague Castle. Following it is a fantastic way to string together the Old Town's greatest hits in one epic walk.
